"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." -Marcus Aurelius
With the Thanksgiving Holiday a couple weeks ago, I was again reminded of how much I have to be thankful for. Often I get caught up with the busyness of day-to-day life and forget to take a moment to sit back and count my blessings. Today is one of those days where I am taking time to do just that.
Today is Tuesday. It's my day away from Anchor to work on my blog, reply to emails, pick up miscellaneous items for the shop, walk around Detroit and explore new places... and count my blessings. I am so grateful that I have a job that I love. I'm surrounded by amazing people that inspire, encourage and support my dreams. I live in a free nation where I feel safe. I have a roof over my head and plenty of food to eat. I certainly do not take these things for granted because I know I am so fortunate.
I often read books written by people that have truly struggled. People that have endured suffering, wars, torture and misfortune. I read these stories and it makes me realize how blessed I am. It's important for me to daily choose joy. I choose to be thankful for what I have. That's not to say I will not strive for more; of course I want to make more money, travel to more places and drive a nicer car; but my happiness in life does not depend on these things. I can be content with the house I live in now while working hard towards my dream home one day. I will choose to always see the glass half full.
One of my favourite Scriptures states "I've learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I'm just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I've found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am." -Philippians 4:11-13 MSG
