It's Wednesday and I'm taking the day off to once again reflect, read, explore, eat delicious food and unwind.
My day starts off with a trip across the border to Astro Coffee, where I let someone else make my coffee. When going to Astro I always order a pour over, and let the barista choose whatever coffee they feel like making. I always drink it black, and of course pair it with something breakfasty to eat. I usually order a piece of frittata, but they were sold out so I had an egg sandwich instead, which was delicious. I'm starting a new book today that Kyle bought me for Valentine's Day, so I sat for about an hour reading it.
What is it about the cafe scene that I like so much? It's not just the coffee. Or the food. Or the cafe. I spend everyday in a coffee shop, so I often get asked why I choose to drive across the border on my day off to hang out in one. The answer - I don't know, I just like it.
I decided when I was fifteen years old that I wanted to open a cafe when I grew up, and I didn't even like coffee. I actually didn't start drinking coffee until I worked at my first coffee shop job, Cordoba Coffee House, when I was about twenty. But I knew right away this was what I was supposed to do with my life. Fast forward a few years (and quite a few other random and not-so-random jobs) and here I am, doing what I love.
What is it that I find so appealing? I think it's the environment. Of course the smell of freshly ground coffee and buttery shortbread cookies baking in the oven add to allure; but I think it's the atmosphere that I enjoy most. I'm a bit of a busy-body who can't sit still. I like to always be doing something, except when I go to a coffee shop. I just sit, people watch, read a book, and relax. One of the reasons I like going to Astro is that they don't have wifi, so it forces me to put my phone away and be present to the moment.
To me, the ideal setting in a coffee shop is friendly, welcoming and laid back. It's a place you can go to unwind. You can sit by yourself and read or catch up with an old friend. Working in a cafe you see folks from all walks of life; a granddaughter treating her grandma to coffee, a first date, a group of new moms excited to get out of the house and converse with other adults, or a businessman just getting work done. And everyone has their own interesting story.
I can honestly say that I love what I do everyday. There are moments I'll be in our tiny cafe kitchen by myself baking in the early morning and a wave of reassurance washes over me and I know that I'm doing exactly what I'm meant to do. For this season in life, I'm in the right place at the right time. And I am so grateful for the opportunity I have. Sometimes I just need to take a moment to breathe, separate myself from the busyness of life, and remind myself of how blessed I am.
I just read this quote, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life. And the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is GREAT work. And the only way to do GREAT work is to LOVE what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking, and DON'T SETTLE. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." -Steve Jobs
I encourage you to pursue your dreams, whatever they may be. Take a leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone, and just try. It's not easy, but I assure you, it's so worth it.
